I have now lived in Panama for almost a year and a half and one of the fun things I like to do is to explore and find new places to eat. It is sometimes a challenge but always a treat. As I was traveling west out of Coronado, my colleagues and I came upon a new restaurant on the PanAmerican Highway which is a second location for entrepreneurs from Canada.
The first site, Santa Clara Panama Beach Bar was opened in early 2011 by Canadian Jennifer Ferguson. The restaurant is located on one of the nicest white beaches in Panama and has been visited by locals and tourists for decades. As a Canadian ex-pat Jennifer has proven that a foreigner can open and succeed as a business owner in Panama. The restaurant offers beach access, showers, bohio rentals and a kitchen that prepares fresh fish caught in Jennifer’s commercial fishing boat. Who doesn’t love a beach bar?
The restaurant has now expanded to a second location in Santa Clara on the right side of the PanAmerican Highway. The restaurant, named Route 1 Diner, recognized that the area was missing a diner style restaurant where you could get good home cooked food at a modest price. The restaurant has been busy with the new rotisserie chicken which has been a great success. Chef Alex is now baking bread and dulces to round out his diner style menu. Imagine a club sandwich in Panama!
Come explore the Santa Clara area and make sure you stop in and say “Hola” to Jennifer and her husband Warren. The restaurant is open at 8am for breakfast 7 days per week .
