Panama MANGO SEASON

It’s Mango season in Panama!  The time of year my friends who own mango plantations in Panama get excited.  They are delicious, abundant and everywhere.  It’s a good thing you can freeze them.  I have friends who pick up ‘road kill mangos’ so they don’t go to waste.

As I started looking for things I could do with mangoes I got a flashback of the movie ‘Forest Gump’. You know the part where Bubba goes through all the things you can do with shrimp and it takes about two days.

You can make mango juice, mango yogurt, mango pineapple salsa, mango ceviche, mango chicken curry, mango popsicles, mango jam – you get the idea, the options are almost endless.

Mangoes, considered the ‘king of fruits’, are the most eaten tree fruit in the world, and they’re enjoying growing markets in Europe and the United States. The United States alone now accounts for an impressive 43.2 percent of the global consumption of the tropical fruit (PanamaMangos.com). They originated in South Asia thousands of years ago.

Mangoes, along with olives, dates and coconuts are members of the Drupe family.  This is a food which an outer fleshy part surrounds a shell with a seed inside. There are many different kinds of mangoes that range in color, shape, flavor and seed size.

While the skin color of mangoes can vary from green to red, yellow or orange, the inner flesh of the mango is mostly a golden yellow. They have a sweet and creamy taste and contain over 20 vitamins and minerals.

A mango a day keeps the doctor away! Mangoes have numerous health benefits such as fighting cancer, alkalizing the body, aiding in weight loss, they regulates diabetes, they help digestion, clean your skin, have aphrodisiac qualities and they aid in concentration and memory loss.  I just hope I can remember to eat one every day!

The Festival del Mango was held this year in Río Hato May 14 – 17th. It is estimated that more than 5000 people visited the event and enjoyed folk performances, viewing the exhibits and tasting the delicious variety of dishes made from the mango base.
There were over 15 mango varieties present which includedPiña, Morado, Papayon de Chitré, Súper Haden, Blanco, Kent, Julie, Irwin, Smith, and Tommy Atkins, Papayon, Papayita, Cascarita, Calidad, Mantequilla, Huevo de burro, Chancleta/Guineo, Cachete de Gringa/Colorado. Who knew there were so many types?
