“Oops, we did it again”, to quote Brittany Spears. Now some of you, if you read our newsletter each month may think that all I do in Panama is listen to music and watch movies. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Also, father from the truth is the ‘Oops’ part of the first line. We, in Panama are happy to be the “Happiest Country in the World”.
You may be wondering what that means. According to The Gallup-Healthways State of Global Well-Being: 2014 Country Well-Being Rankings report for the second year, “ Panama leads all other countries in well-being with 53% of its residents thriving in three or more elements. Panama is also the highest country for purpose (60%) and physical well-being (52%)”.
The Five Elements of Well-Being are composed of:
Purpose: Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
Social: Having supportive relationships and love in your life
Financial: Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
Community: Liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community
Physical: Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily
Levels of Well-Being
Thriving: Well-being that is strong and consistent in a particular element
Struggling: Well-being that is moderate or inconsistent in a particular element
Suffering: Well-being that is low and inconsistent in a particular element
The research shows that people with higher well-being have higher productivity, lower healthcare costs, are more resilient in the face of challenges and are more likely to contribute to the success of their organizations and communities.
In 2014, the U.S. was ranked 23rd in overall well-being, falling from 12th place ranking in 2013.
Where does your current country rank? Are you considering a change, are you looking for a ‘happier’ country or a lifestyle that contains the elements of well-being?
