The best part about the beach community is just that: community. Not that it takes an excuse to get together with good friends, but we like this one, anyway: Bahía Thursdays, which features our love of beach volleyball and good margaritas combined.
We meet every Thursday at 3:30 on the sand in front of the Bahía. Don’t worry if you’re not an athlete–the court is full of people of all ability levels. Last time, the hard-core players went seven games before they called it a night! (I love beach volleyball, but even I didn’t last that long.) Still don’t want to play? Not a problem. Watch, cheer, or come by at 5:00 and go straight to George’s poolside bar and grill.
George is a professional bartender and he keeps a great little menu. I love the grilled chicken quesadilla (with a southwestern flair), and my boyfriend was impressed that George asked him how he’d like his burger cooked (in Panama, you usually just have to take it how it comes!).
Each week, George puts out complimentary appetizer platters. The first time, it was chicken wings, an item not even on the regular menu. Last time, he brought us the quesadillas–my favorite! It all goes good with George’s piña coladas or his nearly-famous margaritas. (After I had ordered my own drink last time, someone approached the bar after me and said, “I heard I have to try the margarita!”).
It’s an absolute joy to gather in the social area by the pool, refreshed from the volleyball game and maybe a brief dip in the ocean, surrounded by old friends and new friends alike. We let it get dark around us as we sip on expertly made cocktails and keep an eye out for the moon peeking up somewhere over the ocean. It’s in times like these that I feel truly thankful to live here, and I have a inkling that a lot of the people around the table feel the same way.
